historic elegance
The elegant Chateau Tongariro is located within Whakapapa Village, in the heart of the Tongariro National Park. This is the oldest national park in New Zealand and it is located in the central North Island. It is surrounded by the sacred peaks of Mount Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.
A timeless neo-Georgian building constructed in 1929, the architecture reflects the hotel’s notable history.
The hotel unfortunately was closed in February 2023 due to seismic work needing to be done. You can film the exterior but the interior is out of bounds.
1920's mountain resort
The Chateau was modelled after the Lake Lousie Resort in Canada by Timaru-based architect Herbert Hall (1880–1939).
