Wairākei Power Station is the worlds second geothermal power station and the first to utilise flash steam from geothermal water as an energy source. Commissioned in November 1958, the Wairākei power plant is situated on the Wairākei geothermal system. It is the first geothermal plant of its kind anywhere in the world, is an iconic symbol of New Zealand’s electricity generation system.

Located not far from Taupō near the Wairākei Geothermal Field it would be perfect for a period piece or post-apocalyptic world. Think Water World with land and steam or Erin Brockovich.
