Maketu is a classic New Zealand small beachside town filled with culture.

Maketu is rich in ancestral Maori culture, specifically the Te Arawa tribe. It was the landing site of the Te Arawa canoe. The town has an estuary from which the Kaituna River used to flow and is adjacent to Newdicks Beach located on the south eastern side of Okurei Point. The views from the hill are spectacular looking back down the coast to Mauao. Frankie Jean and the Morning Star was shot there and the town is famous for its Maketu Pies.
