The Film Bay of Plenty community is deeply saddened by the tragic events that took place on Whakaari, White Island on Monday December 9th.

Our heart- felt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those people who lost their lives as well as to those who are injured and all those caught up in the eruption.

This is a devastating event for all involved and for the wider Bay of Plenty community.

There is currently a rāhui (ban) on visits to Whakaari, White Island, put in place by Ngāti Awa and other coastal iwi.   This means that no-one is permitted on the island at this time.

A number of investigations are also underway and any future use of Whakaari, White Island by anyone, is unclear until all enquires are complete.

Again, we extend our sincere condolences and sympathies to all those affected by this tragedy.

Arohanui
