film industry training

Film Bay of Plenty supports workforce development and upskilling of our Bay of Plenty crew.
Film Bay of Plenty is committed to increasing the crew depth and skill of the wider Bay of Plenty region in order to service different sized productions.
There is already an experienced crew base across the region, who are either working locally or commuting to the main centres to work on large scale productions. With our main hubs of Tauranga, Rotorua and Whakatāne and Taupō only an short drive way, producers can easily supplement their existing crew base with Bay of Plenty crew.

We are always looking for earn and learn opportunities. A successful example of this was working with Paula Jones, Waiariki Studio, who partnered with MBIE and Greenstone TV to run Tohea, an Indigenous Screen Industry Employment, Training and Apprenticeship Programme where 20 local youth were given the opportunity to get a step up into the industry.

We also offer mentoring opportunities for individuals looking to upskill in the industry on short term projects.

tohea programme 2020

TOHEA is an Indigenous Screen Industry Employment, Training and Apprenticeship Programme.

This programme succeeded beyond expectations, ensuring 80% of participants who complete the programme remain in the industry. Belonging to Te Arawa, the Iwi or tribe of the Rotorua Region, TOHEA means ‘to grow or strengthen’ and the programme is the first of its kind in New Zealand.

upskilling & workshops

We are constantly working to bring more workshops to the region that provide connection to key industry players. These workshops/events vary from online panels with key industry players to hands-on in-person workshops.

We also work to provide on-the job development opportunities. This includes internships, attachments and mentorships on productions.

NZFC has funding opportunities for placements. There are four options:

  • Grant of up to $10,000 to cover the cost of assigning an intern or attachment to a film
  • Grant of up to $10,000 to cover the cost of assigning a mentor to a producer or director working on an NZFC-funded feature film
  • Grant of up to $12,000 to cover a professional placement with a New Zealand company
  • Grant of up to $30,000 to cover a professional placement with an international production company
